Hamster Playground was originally based on "Hamster Classic Vr. 1.3.22.0", which itself was based on the original Hamster code (both with same license). The (co-) authors of this 1.3.22.0 version were (as far as I know):
Current versions of Hamster Classic can be found at: http://www.tglsoft.de/
The "regular expression"-routines used in Hamster are based on "Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE)" written by Philip Hazel (see http://www.pcre.org/ for details):

PCRE LICENCE
PCRE is a library of functions to support regular expressions whose syntax and semantics are as close as possible to those of the Perl 5 language.

Although the wrapper-class used for PCRE uses a slightly different approach, parts of it are at least inspired by the concepts used in "uperlre". "uperlre" is a wrapper-class for PCRE written by Luu Tran (<luu(at)xnews.3dnews.net>), also author of XNews newsreader (see http://xnews.3dnews.net/ for details).
TCP/IP communication in this Hamster version is done with "Indy", written by Chad Z. Hower (Kudzu) and the Indy Pit Crew (see http://www.nevrona.com/indy/ for details):
